Grade 23 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V ELI)

Grade 23 is Grade 5 with the interstitial elements pulled down — ELI stands for extra-low interstitial. Oxygen is capped at 0.13% against 0.20%. The strength minimums fall slightly, and fracture toughness and ductility rise, which is why it is specified where a crack cannot be tolerated.

What Grade 23 is

Grade 23 (UNS R56401, Ti-6Al-4V ELI) shares Grade 5's aluminium and vanadium ranges. The difference lies entirely in what is kept out: oxygen is limited to 0.13%, hydrogen to 0.0125% and iron to 0.25%, against Grade 5's 0.20%, 0.015% and 0.40%. That tighter chemistry needs additional melting control, and it is reflected in the price.

Interstitials strengthen titanium but reduce its tolerance for defects. Pulling them down therefore costs a little strength — minimum tensile drops to 828 MPa against Grade 5's 895 MPa — and buys toughness and ductility. In service where a flaw, a notch or a cryogenic temperature matters, that trade is deliberate.

Interstitial control explained

“Extra-low interstitial” refers to the small elements that sit in the gaps of the titanium lattice: oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen. Oxygen and nitrogen are potent solid-solution strengtheners; hydrogen is harmful in quantity because it can form hydrides and embrittle the metal; carbon must be controlled to avoid carbide formation.

  • Oxygen 0.13% max vs 0.20% — the headline difference, and the main driver of improved ductility and toughness.
  • Hydrogen 0.0125% max vs 0.015% — tighter control against hydride-related embrittlement.
  • Iron 0.25% max vs 0.40% — restricted because iron can segregate and form brittle regions.
  • Carbon 0.08% max and nitrogen 0.05% max — controlled for the same reasons.

Medical and aerospace context

Grade 23 is heavily referenced in implant and aerospace work, and it is worth separating what is a material standard from what is a qualification. ASTM F136 is the standard specification for wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI intended for surgical implant manufacture, and it sets chemistry, mechanical properties and microstructure requirements. Referencing F136 on a purchase order is a material requirement.

Boundary statement. Meeting a material specification is not the same as holding a quality-system approval or releasing a regulated product. We are a supplier, not a licensed device manufacturer, and we do not claim ISO 13485, AS9100, NADCAP or any equivalent approval. Tell us at enquiry stage what your qualification requires and we will say plainly whether we can support it.

Forms we quote

  • Round bar — the form most often requested in Grade 23; see bar & rod.

Frequently asked questions

What does ELI mean in titanium?
Extra-low interstitial. It refers to the interstitial elements — oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen — being held below the limits allowed for the standard alloy grade. Grade 23 is the ELI version of Grade 5.
Is Grade 23 stronger than Grade 5?
No. Minimum tensile is slightly lower: 828 MPa against 895 MPa under ASTM B348. What Grade 23 offers is better fracture toughness and ductility margin, not more strength.
Why does Grade 23 cost more?
Because holding oxygen below 0.13% and iron below 0.25% requires additional melting and handling control, and because ELI material is produced in smaller volume per campaign.
Is Grade 23 the same as ASTM F136?
ASTM F136 is a specification covering wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI for surgical implants; Grade 23 is the grade designation. Ordering 'Grade 23 to ASTM F136' names both. Ordering to ASTM B348 Gr23 names a different standard with different minimums.
Can you supply medical-grade or aerospace-grade certified material?
We quote material to the specification and revision you name. We do not hold sector quality-system approvals, and we do not claim them. Describe your requirement and we will confirm what we can support before you place an order.
