Overview
Bar is where titanium meets the machine shop. It is the form most often bought by CNC job shops, fastener manufacturers and equipment builders, and the enquiries we see are usually small and mixed: a few lengths of one diameter, a couple of another, two grades on the same requisition.
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) dominates the machined-parts end of the market because of its strength. Grade 2 dominates anything corrosion-driven or welded. Grade 9 sits between the two where a component has to be formed or welded as well as carry load.
Specifications
| Product | Size range | Length | Supply condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round bar (rolled / drawn) | φ3 – φ350 mm | 1000 – 6000 mm | Annealed (M), as-rolled (R), cold-worked (Y) |
| common sizes | φ5 – φ150 mm | 1000 – 6000 mm | as above |
| Large forged bar | φ80 – φ500 mm | per order | Annealed, forged |
| Square bar | 6 × 6 – 15 × 15 mm | per order | Annealed, cold-drawn |
| Hexagon bar | S8 – S50 | per order | Annealed, cold-drawn |

Standards
- ASTM B348 — the primary specification for titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets.
- ASTM B381 — titanium alloy forgings, called up where bar is replaced by a forged form.
- AMS 4928 — the aerospace material specification for Ti-6Al-4V bar, wire and forgings. The specification has been named by customers in their own enquiries; capability to supply against it is confirmed per project rather than assumed.
- GB/T 2965 and GB/T 13810 — the Chinese GB standards for titanium bar and for surgical-implant titanium respectively.
- Customer-named European standards — enquiries have referenced DIN 65040, LN 9297 and TA6V designations. These are customer-specified standards, which is not the same thing as us holding a qualification to them.
How these designations relate to one another is covered in the titanium standards guide.
Supply conditions: R / M / Y
| Condition | Meaning | When it is used |
|---|---|---|
| R (as-rolled / hot-worked) | Produced by hot working without a separate anneal | Where further hot working or machining will follow and the exact surface does not matter |
| M (annealed) | Fully annealed for maximum ductility and a stress-relieved structure | The normal choice for machining, forming and welding |
| Y (cold-worked) | Cold-drawn or cold-finished for higher strength and a tighter finish | Small diameter bar, precision shafts and pins |
Cut-to-length and sawn ends
Bar is cut to length before shipment so that you are not paying freight on offcut and not handling a six-metre bundle in a five-metre workshop. Sawn ends are standard; if the end condition matters — chamfered, faced or protected — state it in the enquiry.
Grades and the machining trade
For CNC work the choice is usually between Gr2 and Gr5, and it is worth being explicit about why:
- If the part's job is corrosion resistance and it is not highly stressed, Gr2 machines more easily and costs less per kilo.
- If the part carries load, Gr5 is normally specified — its minimum tensile strength is roughly two and a half times that of Gr2, but it work-hardens and needs more careful tooling and speeds.
- If the part has to be formed or welded as well as machined, Gr9 is often the compromise.

Small quantities and mixed size lists
A quoted example
A European enquiry for TC4 (the Chinese designation for Ti-6Al-4V) covered a bar range from φ16 mm to φ145 mm plus rectangular blocks against customer-named European and aerospace standards, at a total quantity of around 12.9 tonnes. It illustrates the point that a one-stop titanium supplier is expected to handle a wide size spread in one offer, not one diameter at a time.
Medical-grade context
Bar for surgical and dental applications is normally specified to GB/T 13810 or ASTM F136 in Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI). Those are the standards that define the material. Supplying material described as meeting them is a separate question from holding a medical-device quality certification, and we do not hold one. Where an implant-grade specification is required, send the standard, the condition and the application and we will confirm feasibility project by project.
